Preparation

Debarb the hook and secure it in your vise. If adding weight, wrap 10-15 turns of lead wire onto the front half of the shank and secure it with thread wraps, building smooth tapered transitions.

Tail

Select a plume of olive marabou. Measure a clump of fibers against the hook shank; the tail should be approximately equal to the shank length. Tie this clump in securely at the bend of the hook, ensuring it doesn't spin around the shank.

Rib & Body

Tie in your ribbing wire at the same point as the tail. Then, tie in the olive chenille. Wrap the thread forward to just behind the hook eye, creating a smooth, even underbody.

Body Construction

Palmer the chenille forward in close, touching turns to create a full body. Tie off and trim the excess chenille just behind the hook eye.

Hackle & Rib

Select a hackle feather with fibers sized approximately 1.5x the hook gap. Tie it in by the tip just behind the hook eye, in front of the chenille body. Palmer the hackle rearward, in evenly spaced wraps (about 5-6 turns) all the way back to the tail tie-in point.

Securing the Hackle

As soon as your last wrap of hackle is in place, catch it with the gold wire rib. Counter-wrap the wire forward over the palmered hackle, following the same path as the hackle but in the opposite direction. This "counter-wrap" traps the hackle stem, making the fly much more durable against trout teeth.

Finish

Secure the wire and hackle with several tight thread wraps. Trim the excess wire and hackle. Build a neat, tapered thread head, whip finish, and apply a drop of head cement for security.
