On the water
Hard-running desert canyon water, wild redsides that fight above their weight, steelhead in the fall.
Counter-wrap the rib against the hackle stem and it survives a season instead of a morning. Trim the hackle flat underneath so it sits IN the film rather than on stilts above it.
Dead drift through the riffle, then let it swing and skitter at the end. The swing is often when it gets eaten. Deschutes River fish see a lot of flies, and the ones that keep working are the ones tied for the water rather than for the bin.
Every fly is tied by hand, one at a time, on the hook listed above. No two are identical and none of them came out of a machine.
